I have lots of memories of my Great Grandparents.

  • They were called 'Cake Nana' and 'Cake Poppy' by me and my cousins. Cake Nana always had baking in her cake tins.  Caramel slice, Louise Slice, Fruit Cake were my favourite.  The tins were the old ones with puppy dog photos or snowy scenes.
  • Cake Poppy was a carpenter and always let us play with his hand drills, files, hammers and nails in his shed on a offcut he always had around.  Me and my oldest cousin had shetland ponies, so he made us our first horse floats.  When we decided we wanted to try and harness train our ponies to pull a gig.  He made us each a gig.  They had no suspension and trailer wheels.  Every time we went over a bump, we would leave the seat.  Instead of varnished ornate wood, ours were square looking and  painted bright blue and white.  We loved them!!  In fact my shetland pony won a cross country and obstacle event with mine.  When I asked my Cake Poppy if he could make me a pair of stilts, he made a pair for me and all my cousins.  They only raised us 50cm off the ground, but we spent hours on them.
  • Cake Nana and Poppy had travelled around the world and had bought a souvenir doll from each country.  I used to go over to the display cabinet every time I visited and eyed up those dolls.  One day they let me choose one.  They had previously bet each other on what one I'd choose.  Out of all the dolls, I picked the doll that Cake Poppy had thought I'd choose.  He did a little jig and said to Cake Nana, "See I knew she'd pick that one".  Cake Nana said she'd thought I'd pick the pretty one with blue eyeshadow.
  • They didn't have a toy box for the visiting grandchildren, but they did have one little rubber alligator toy that sat on the fireplace mantle.  Cake Poppy would always make it eat our fingers.  There was also a string puppet called Gepetto that hung on the wall, and Cake Poppy would take it down and show me how to move it.
  • Cake Nana had an amazing flower garden.  She was also the fastest knitter I have ever met.  She made us all knitted block blankets.
  • Cake Nana walked everywhere except when Cake Poppy took her on their Sunday drives.  Cake Poppy and bought her a bike once, but she couldn't get the hang of it and refused to use it.  When we got new bikes and our feet couldn't quite reach the pedals, Cake Poppy would nail wooden blocks to them so we could.

What is missing from this post?
I have no photos of them.
It saddens me that I can't show my kids who they were.
That is why I'm offering  "Nanny and Poppy photo shoots" for the Month of August.
There is 7 of these sessions available.
