Dancing in the Park

dancing photo in black and white
NOTES ON THIS EXHIBITION IMAGE

THE WHERE
Government Gardens in Rotorua.  An old concrete foundation to a hospital building that never got built in World War 2.

THE WHO
Madelyn Skilton - Dancer

THE HOW
Camera: Canon 70d
Natural lighting
1/500 shutter
f4.5
ISO 640
Lens: Canon 24-105mm set at 40mm

THE THOUGHT PROCESS
Summer is hanging out at the local parks, and if you have a dancing soul, you also dance where ever you are.  This is one definite photo shoot I wanted to do for the Summer Black and White Exhibition.  A dancer in the park, using the trees, street lamps, and whatever else was there.

I loved Maddy's expression in this image.  I think it captures someone in their own little world for a time.

Summer is dancing in the sunlight, in secret hidden spots, outside.

Miss Poppy Bloom

black and white vintage style portrait
THE WHERE
Old Scouts Hall in Ngongotaha, Rotorua

THE HOW
Camera: Canon 70d
Lens: 24-105mm set at 32mm
ISO: 125
Shutter: 1/320
 F 7.1
Natural lighting

THE THOUGHT PROCESS
It was lovely to photograph Miss Poppy Bloom, vintage pin up model, to include in my black and white Summer Exhibition.  The vintage pin up models I have worked with know their art so well. I don't need to tell them how to pose.  I can just place them in a scene, let them do their thing, and capture the moment.

The old hall and Miss Poppy Bloom reminded me of Summer Evening dances in some old country hall. Cicadas humming, the smell of hay, the faint tinkling and hustling from the hall's kitchen as some of the ladies put on a cuppa tea and supper... and do I hear Bing Cosby?

Beauty headshots

beauty headshots

The commission was to get some close up headshots of model Sharn Tapsell, for a promotional poster for Waiariki beauty school.  Two of the star students did the makeup and hair, Shaquille and Nora, (I have contact details if you are interested in their work), and I was to pop in to get some quick shots around the classroom.

The backdrops are walls and floors around the main classroom.
The beauty school is well lit, and because it is a quick shoot  I keep the lighting simple.  One speedlight, on camera, changing the tilt to where I wanted the light to bounce off.  Being a beauty school there was lots of mirrors and walls to bounce light off.   Because the images are for big posters, I tried to keep the ISO low so there would be less noise when blown up.

Photo editing was some brightening of the eyes and using frequency separation to smooth out little teenage skin bumps.

Here are a few shots from the different backgrounds and the camera notes with them.
All shots are done with Canon 50d camera with Canon 50mm lens.  Speedlight is Yongnuo 565 EX.
White wall.

Under the Willow Tree

9/8/2016

black and white woman portrait
For my black and white summer exhibition, I was lucky enough to have Pearl Paki model for me, before she went overseas to continue her modelling career.

THE THOUGHT PROCESS

We did two clothing changes and locations.  The first was more hippy, flared jeans afro type shoot on a bridge, which I also loved, but these shots and dress suited the summer theme more, so went into the exhibition.  Pearl is wearing a green vintage dress from Kulture Shock.

I have always loved weeping willow  trees, even as a kid.  There is something a little magical about them. This Weeping Willow is in the reserve across from my home, and I use it a lot for my portrait sessions.  It has had buntings, blankets and mosquito nets hanging from its branches.  Couches, tea trolleys, picnic blankets and vintage prams have been used as sets underneath.  I have even used its fallen branches as frames for my head floral crowns.  But over winter its leaves fall off and it looks miserable and unhappy.  So for me the Weeping Willow is a Summer Tree and represents picnics and outdoor imaginings.

THE HOW
Camera 50d
Lens 24-105mm at 95mm
ISO 400
f/5
1/250 sec
Natural lighting

Summer is a green willow tree, weaving yourself amongst its' branches, keeping cool under its umbrella type shade.

daddy and son black and white
Spring has just started.  On  a cloudy day, with the daffodils just starting to appear, we went to Centennial Park in Rotorua to take some family photos.  The mission, was to get a few family photos with the youngest boy being the focus.

Equipment: Canon 70d and Canon 24-105mm lens
Had a reflector and speedlights on hand, but found with the cloudy day, the natural light was lovely.

Here are a few of my faves.

She became my poster pony

black and white portrait of pony
Dolly the pony drooling over her apple and looking at the camera was what made fall in love with this image for the Summer black and white exhibition.  It was the biggest print I had on display.  The colour version of this became the image on my new business cards.

THE HOW
Canon 50d camera
Canon 50mm lens
f 4.5
bright day 1/1000th sec shutter speed
Natural light falling slightly off center in the late afternoon sun with very little cloud.

THE WHERE
At their home in Hamurana.  Love real lifestyle, natural lifestyle shots.

At home, with the wildflowers and the hills.  The dog and cats photo bombing as much as they could.  I will feel the summer warmth every time I look at this picture.
