I had a chance to work with the stunning makeup artistry of Shaquille Baker this week. Alongside the model, Sharn Tapsell and I also got to use the wearable art of Emma Edworthy, an outfit made of nature. Here are a few highlights. Here is the link to Shaquille Baker Makeup and Beauty
Looking forward to working with her again. xox Calico Jo New project is a photo series inspired by nursery rhymes and featuring children as my models.
I have 10 Nursery Rhymes chosen, (with a couple in reserve as well). LITTLE TOMMY TUCKER WHAT ARE LITTLE GIRLS MADE OF? JACK BE NIMBLE MARY, MARY, QUITE CONTRARY HEY DIDDLE DIDDLE HICKORY DICKORY DOCK RIDE A COCK HORSE LITTLE MISS MUFFET SING A SONG OF SIXPENCE As the nursery rhymes are going to inspiration points only, the goal is to add my own photographic twists or embellishments to them. Idea bubbles so far are: Mary, Mary: - Two Mary's , two sisters. Give them a pile of fake flowers, lollipops, sticks, lace, ribbons, shells, pinwheels, feathers, necklaces, to make their own little fantasy garden. Get photos of them making it interacting with each other, and then some more posed shots within the garden....glitter for seed scattering? Jack Be Nimble: - Boy and dog, stick fort in the bush, my oil lantern. Jumping and stick games with boy and dog. Sing a Song of Sixpence: - Boy and Girl playing dress ups with crowns and capes over their every day clothing, stick scepters and origami black birds...... Jack and Jill: - Good ole fashioned sibling water fight......with a hill..... Ride a Cock Horse: -2 Part photo session, with girl riding broom or hobby horse in jeans, then her in a fantasy dress with a real pony wearing bells, flowers, and ribbons etc I want to do another exhibition and look book at the end of it. If anybody wants to add their creative talents to the project, the more the merrier, and credits and photos will be given of course. I will be doing model call outs along the way too, so drop me a line if you have a child who you think would be perfect. Preferable 10 years and under, but I'm a bit of a go with the flow type of person, so I'll keep my options open on age. Love to hear your thoughts and ideas on this! XOX Calico J0 Rosie and I have a lot in common. We both love photography, books, and Dr Who! We met through photography and it was awesome to go over to meet and photograph her family. Photos were taken in Yatton Park in Tauranga. Here are a few highlights. Love this family.
xox, Calico Jo For this portrait session, I wanted to make use of window light and window reflections. I was lucky enough to have the natural beauty of Panda Harteman to model for me. The main focus was on black and white portraits, so I used the monochrome setting on my camera to make sure the feel was right. Of course once you open up the raw file to edit, it will change back to it's original colour form. There was the odd one or two, that I loved and kept in colour too. My 3 faves are in my Summer black and white photo exhibition starting on June 5th to the end of July in Essence Cafe in Ngongotaha Village, Rotorua, NZ
xox Calico Jo It is all booked in and ready to go! Starting on the 4th June and going through to the end of July, my photo exhibition, 'Hot Summer - Cool Black and Whites', will be at the Essence Cafe in my local Ngongotaha Village in Rotorua.
I was very thankful with all the support I got from models volunteering their skills along with people volunteering clothing, make up skills and even a bathtub! There will be 10 hanging portraits and a photo book with 30 images to browse over a coffee. Features black and white portraits of: Kharl Wirepa - Rotorua Fashion Designer and owner of Gloss model agency Jessica Caulfield - Co-owner of Kulture Shock Ngongotaha Stella and Georgia - Rotorua Musicians and Singers. Miss Poppy Bloom - Vintage Pin Up model Renati Waaka - Rotorua up and coming Male Model Panda Harteman - Rotorua Artist and Model Brittany and Georgia - Rotorua Models and Friends Madelyn Grace - Rotorua Dancer Sharn and Dolly - Rotorua Model and her pony Pearl Paki - Model now making her mark in Australia. I have some coffee vouchers available (first in, first served) if you think you would like to come and view it. Just email me: calicojoni@gmail.com Love to see you there, xox Calico Jo I have been busy photographing clients headshots lately. As the rain is pelting down outside, I am reminded how winter is great time to catch up and update the things we let slide when the weather is warm and we are too busy having fun in the Summer sun. Portfolio shots / headshots is one of those things we can put off, but are important for websites and promotional material. People like to see who they are going to be working with and I think it makes a business more personable. I like to mix it up a bit with this type of portrait session. Do some formal type shots in colour and also get some more relaxed, personality type shots in black and white. The formal type shots are the photos that tend to get used in promotional material and websites. The black and whites are also nice to use on a "About Me" page on a website, and also as portfolio pics on social media. Here are a few from a headshot photo session I have just finished for a Beauty Tutor. Thinking I better take my own advice and update my own headshots. I've had short hair for about a year now!
xox Calico Jo Black and white dancing photos was one of the first portrait shoots I thought of for my Summer black and white series. I was very grateful that the talented Maddy agreed to model for me. Photos were done at the Rotorua Government Gardens. Here are the photo highlights without the 5 I have chosen for the exhibition. Thank you Maddy, for being my pretty dancer in the park,
xox Calico Jo March has flown by and my black and white summer series got pushed aside a bit because of paid work, (not complaining about getting about the paid work :D). I finally sat down and started editing this cool duo. I wanted to do an evening shoot that was a bit James Deanish, and I had one set idea of two people walking along kicking up the dust in the summer heat. Originally I was thinking two guys, but when Brittany asked to model alongside her friend Georgia, I thought a tom boy twist might be interesting. Found some perfect kicking dust up at the Blue Lake car park. So here are a few of the highlights, without the 5 chosen for the exhibition. Thanks for being my Cool Cats, Brittany and Georgia!
xox Calico Jo Highlights from a portrait session with Renati. Taken out at Waipa Mill Road. Inspiration: a bit of James Dean, a bit of Bruno Mars and of course, Renati himself. My fave five are not shown. They will be in my black and white summer series exhibition. .... on a hot summers evening, by the shade of the trees and the loud chirping of the cicadas.
